An aide to Muqtada al-Sadr has lashed out at Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, Iraq's most revered Shia cleric, for keeping silent over clashes that have killed hundreds in Baghdad.

Fifteen people were killed and dozens wounded in fighting in the Sadr City district of the capital on Friday, US and Iraqi officials said.

The area is home to some of the poorest Shia in Iraq, and forms the bedrock of support for al-Sadr and his al-Mahdi Army militia.

US forces have killed 25 fighters in two days of clashes in the area.

Hospitals in Sadr City said they had received four bodies and treated 51 wounded by Friday morning, but gave no further casualty figures after that. Children were among the wounded.
Fighting has raged in Baghdad since Nuri al-Maliki, the Iraqi prime minister, ordered a crackdown on fighters in late March.
Several hundred people have been killed since then and while al-Maliki said the crackdown was to disarm groups of fighters, al-Sadr's followers see it as an attempt to sideline them ahead of local elections in October.

Speaking at Friday prayers, Sheikh Sattar Battat, an aide to al-Sadr, said he was "surprised" that al-Sistani had failed to condemn the violence.
"We are surprised by the silence in Najaf where the highest Shiite religious authority is based," he said, referring to al-Sistani.

"For 50 days Sadr City is being bombed ... Children, women and old people are being killed by all kinds of US weapons, and Najaf remains silent."
Battat said the al-Sadr movement has not seen any "reaction or fatwa [religious decree] from Najaf" criticising the government assault on Shia fighters in Sadr City.
"For us this means that Najaf accepts the massacre in Sadr City," he said.
Shia clerics, including al-Sistani, have remained silent despite the high numbers of people killed since al-Maliki ordered the crackdown.
Also on Friday, fighters launched rockets towards the fortified Green Zone, taking advantage of a sandstorm that gave cover from attacks by US aircraft.
US forces did not confirm any strikes inside the Green Zone but one rocket damaged the bureau of the BBC.

Επιστροφή στις Φάμπρικες της Γερμανίας και στου Βελγίου τις Στωές ;;

Up to a million people may have been left homeless in Myanmar by the weekend's devastating cyclone, UN officials have said, as the death toll from the storm continues to soar.

As damage assessment reports came in from the worst-hit areas, Myanmar's state media said on Tuesday that at least 22,000 people have been killed, with another 41,000 missing.

In just one town alone, Bogolay, 10,000 people died when Cyclone Nargis swept across Myanmar on Saturday, flattening 95 per cent of the houses.

Speaking to Al Jazeera, Noppadon Pattama, Thailand's foreign minister, on Tuesday said: "Conditions are very bad. We need temporary housing, shelters ... humanitarian assistance should be given to Myanmar very urgently."

"In our small part, we have donated food and medicines, and $100,000 financial assistance to Myanmar.

"I am not sure whether they could clean up in two weeks but it is going to take longer to build shelters or repair houses because the scale is far-reaching."

Aid agencies say there are serious shortages of power, drinking water and food in the disaster areas, raising fears of disease outbreaks because of poor sanitation and lack of medical supplies.

"Our biggest fear is that the aftermath could be more lethal than the storm itself," said Caryl Stern, US head of Unicef, the UN children's fund.

The densely-populated Irrawaddy delta region took the full force of the storm, and relief agencies say many of the poorest communities there have been virtually wiped out.

Large areas of cropland have also been destroyed in what is the country's main rice-producing region.

Already food prices in Yangon and other parts of Myanmar have soared by up to 100 per cent since the storm hit, adding to the burden of Myanmar's millions of poor.

Paul Risley, spokesman for the World Foof Programme in Bangkok, said the UN food agency hoped to step up airborne deliveries within the next 48 hours.

"The challenge will be getting to the affected areas with road blockages everywhere, he said.

needed to prevent disease outbreaks [EPA]
As the scale of the crisis becomes clear, Myanmar's military government has made a rare appeal for international assistance.

Nyan Win, Myanmar's foreign minister was quoted on Tuesday by state-run television as saying that at least 10,000 people had died in the delta region, while a smaller number died in and around Yangon, the country's largest city.

"News and data are still being collected, so there may be many more casualties," he said.

Meanwhile, international relief operations are slowly beginning to get access to Myanmar.

The first emergency flight from Thailand was expected to land in Yangon on Tuesday afternoon; the European Union has pledged just over $3m in aid; while China has also said it is ready to offer assistance.

China has long been a staunch diplomatic ally of Myanmar's military government, which is regarded as a pariah in the West because of its human rights record.

The US has also pledged emergency aid, but said more would only be forthcoming once Myanmar allows international assessment teams into the country.

Myanmar's military government has previously been suspicious of outside aid offers and have put tough restrictions on the few aid agencies that are allowed to operate in the country.

Referendum

On Tuesday it announced that a planned national referendum on a new military-backed constitution would be postponed in some of the areas worst-hit by the storm, but would go ahead on schedule in the rest of the country.

Photo

The ruling generals have touted the new constitution as a key step on the path to democratic elections in 2010.

But the referendum and the new charter have been dismissed as a sham by pro-democracy groups as well as the US and other Western governments who say they are designed merely to ensure the military's continued grip on power.

The government had been hoping for an easy ride with the referendum, and it remains to be seen what effect the current crisis will have on the vote.

Some opposition groups have suggested the impact of the cyclone could stir an already tense political situation in Myanmar, especially given the government's apparent inability to help its own citizens.
